Design Systems Lead · Interface architecture, accessibility, shared design language

Ten years spent turning scattered product interfaces into systems teams can actually build on — documented, accessible and durable enough to survive a redesign.

Profile

What I do

I build and maintain design systems for product organisations — the component libraries, interaction rules and documentation that let a dozen squads ship interfaces that look and behave like one product. My background is split evenly between interface craft and the quieter systems work: naming, versioning, accessibility criteria and the reviews that keep a library honest.

I work best where design and front-end sit close together, and where a system is treated as a product with users of its own. Currently open to a lead or principal role on a team that is ready to invest in shared foundations rather than another redesign.

Selected work

Three projects worth explaining

Lumen Component Library

Northbeam Software

A multi-brand publishing suite had four product teams maintaining four versions of the same interface. I led the audit, defined the token layer and shipped a library that expresses brand difference through theming rather than forked components.

Teams now brief new surfaces in system terms, and brand changes land as a token update instead of a redesign cycle.

Fieldnote Accessibility Overhaul

Northbeam Software

A research tool with dense tables and a heavy keyboard workflow had grown unusable for assistive-technology users. I rebuilt the focus model, the table semantics and the notification pattern, then wrote the acceptance criteria that made those rules part of definition-of-done.

Accessibility moved from an end-of-cycle audit to a check every squad performs before review.

Tidewater Design Language

Halyard Labs

A maritime logistics platform needed an interface that stayed legible on bright decks and low-spec hardware. I set the contrast floor, the density scale and a restrained motion policy, and paired with engineering to keep the implementation within the platform's performance budget.

The language still governs the product's planning, tracking and reporting modules.

Experience

Where I have worked

Design Systems Lead · Northbeam Software

2022 — Present
  • Own the shared library and its documentation across four product teams, from contribution model to release notes.
  • Run a fortnightly system review with design and front-end, and mentor two designers on systems practice.
  • Set the accessibility standard the product organisation ships against.

Senior Product Designer · Halyard Labs

2019 — 2022
  • Designed planning and tracking modules for an operations platform used in low-connectivity conditions.
  • Established the design language later adopted across the company's product line.

Product Designer · Quillwood Studio

2016 — 2019
  • Worked across client engagements in education and civic technology, from research through delivery.
  • Introduced the studio's first shared pattern library and front-end handoff process.

Interface Designer · Cobble & Co

2014 — 2016
  • Produced responsive interfaces and production-ready markup for small product teams.
